Cranial nerves cheat sheet: all 12 nerves and how to test them
Cranial nerve questions ask two things: what the nerve does and how you test it.
Run CN I to XII in the same order every time so you never skip one. A classic mnemonic for the order is "On Old Olympus' Towering Top, A Finn And German Viewed Some Hops."
| Nerve | Function | How to Test |
|---|---|---|
| CN I Olfactory | Smell |
| CN II Optic | Vision |
| CN III Oculomotor | Eye movement, pupil, eyelid |
| CN IV Trochlear | Downward/inward eye movement |
| CN V Trigeminal | Facial sensation; chewing |
| CN VI Abducens | Lateral eye movement |
| CN VII Facial | Facial expression; anterior taste |
| CN VIII Vestibulocochlear | Hearing and balance |
| CN IX Glossopharyngeal | Posterior taste; swallow; gag |
| CN X Vagus | Gag, swallow, voice; parasympathetic organs |
| CN XI Accessory | Shoulder shrug, head turn |
| CN XII Hypoglossal | Tongue movement |
RN pearl: Run CN I to XII in order every time; 'On Old Olympus...' keeps you from skipping one on exam day.
